Lincoln Cent Mintages

2009 Lincoln Cent Indiana Formative YearsWith the Illinois release ceremony for the third Lincoln design of the 2009 Lincoln Cents only a day away, many were caught by surprise to find that the US Mint had stopped sales of the second Lincoln design, the Formative Years or Rail Splitter Cent, on Wednesday August 12th.

Since May 14th, the Mint had been offering the second design in two-roll sets for $8.95. These sets consisted of one roll of 50 coins from the Mint in Philadelphia and one roll of 50 coins from the Mint in Denver.

As of August 9th, the Mint had recorded that 300,246* of the second design two-roll sets were purchased. In comparison, [click to continue…]

Lincoln Rail Splitter Cent Mintage Update

2009 Lincoln Cent Indiana Formative YearsThe United States Mint has released the latest mintage figures through to June and reports a sizable 228,800,000 increase in the production of Formative Years pennies bearing the Rail Splitter design.

164,400,000 more were minted at Denver and 64,400,000 were struck at Philadelphia in June. The respective totals per Mint facility for Rail Splitter coins are now at 363,600,000 and 376,000,000.

And with that, the first redesigned 2009 Lincoln cent, the Birthplace or Log Cabin design, is now the scarcest of the pair. In particular, those struck in Philadelphia have the lowest mintage at [click to continue…]
