In a surprise move, the US Mint placed two-roll sets of the Lincoln Rail Splitter cents back on sale. The Mint had pulled the rolls right before the third redesigned Lincoln Professional Life Cent launched.
At the time sales were stopped, the two-roll sets had reached 300,246. A week later the numbers were revised down to 300,000, leading many to think future sales of the third and fourth penny roll set would have the same limit. Then, as of Sunday, Aug. 23, the sales figures were again trimmed to 296,000, and the rolls later went back on sale.
The news this week that will most affect sales going forward, however, is the launch of Lincoln Bicentennial Cent Proof Set. As in the other proof sets issued this year, the pennies within are struck in the same bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) as the very first 1909 Lincoln cent.
But at a price point of just $7.95 each, the sets should fly off US Mint store shelves and perhaps eventually exceed the already high numbers of the other sets. Time will tell, obviously. Next week's report will be extremely interesting.
